The legal system is a machine. It is vast, complex, indifferent, and—for the people caught inside it—often overwhelming. Whether you are walking into a courtroom to defend your freedom, sitting at a negotiating table to restructure your family, or lying in a hospital bed wondering how you will pay your bills, the system tends to treat you like a variable in an equation. It sees a docket number. It sees a charge. It sees a claim ID.

I see you.

My name is Andrew M. Wessler, and I built my legal practice on a simple, unbreakable promise: You will never face a judge alone.

If you are looking for a lawyer in Decatur or the surrounding Central Illinois area, you have found him. You know that there are firms that operate like factories, churning out settlements and plea deals to keep the volume high. That is not who I am.

I am writing this to tell you exactly who I am, what I stand for, and why, when your future is on the line, you want me in your corner.

Who I Am: A Protector at Heart

My path to the law wasn’t accidental; it was inevitable. From a very early age, I knew my life would be defined by protecting those who needed protecting. We all remember the dynamics of the playground—the bullies who used their size or status to push others around, and the people who stood by and watched. I was never one to stand by. Whether it was standing up to those bullies or speaking out for friends who couldn’t find the words themselves, I have always answered the call to fight for the underdog.

That instinct followed me through my education at Western Illinois University, where I studied Criminal Justice and Political Science, and into Drake University Law School, where I focused on Constitutional Law, Civil Rights, and Litigation. Since being admitted to the Illinois Bar in 2012 and the U.S. District Court for the Central District of Illinois in 2017, I have turned that childhood instinct into a professional weapon for my clients.

I am not just a lawyer who files paperwork. I am an advocate who takes an honest, straightforward, and aggressive approach to practicing law. I understand that when you walk into my office, you are likely going through one of the most difficult times of your life. You may be confused, scared, or angry. My job is to take that weight off your shoulders, provide a clear strategy, and ensure your voice is the loudest one in the room.

The Wessler Difference: Why Choose Me?

In a sea of legal options, why should you choose me as your attorney? The answer lies in the difference between a "volume" lawyer and a "strategy" lawyer.

  1. You Get Me—Not a Junior Associate

One of the dirty secrets of the legal industry—especially with massive firms—is the "bait and switch." You see the senior partner on TV, you hire the firm based on that reputation, and then your case is handed off to a junior associate who is still learning the ropes, or worse, you deal primarily with a call center.

When you trust me with your freedom, your family, or your recovery, you get me. I handle your strategy. I handle your filings. I am the one standing beside you in court. There are no gatekeepers between you and my legal team. I believe that effective representation requires a direct line of communication. I keep you involved, ensuring you understand exactly what is happening every step of the way.

  1. Local Insight Matters

Law isn't just about statutes written in a book; it’s about the people enforcing them. I live and work right here in Central Illinois. I know how the local judges run their courtrooms. I know how the prosecutors build their cases. I know the rhythm of the dockets in Central Illinois.

That local insight is often the difference between a standard defense and a winning strategy. An out-of-town lawyer might know the law, but if they don't know the landscape, they are fighting with one hand tied behind their back. I use my knowledge of the local legal ecosystem to craft arguments that land effectively and negotiate deals that actually serve your interests.

  1. We Prepare for War

Too many lawyers are "agreement factories." They look at a case and immediately start calculating the quickest path to a settlement or a plea deal so they can move on to the next client.

I take a different approach: I prepare every single case as if it is going to trial.

We don't just plead; we fight. By preparing for war, we often force the other side to offer better terms because they know I am not afraid to step into the courtroom and let a jury decide. I challenge the evidence. I control the narrative. If we can reach a favorable agreement, great. But if we have to fight, I am already laced up and ready to go.

How I Can Help You

My practice focuses on three critical areas where the stakes are highest: Criminal Defense, Family Law, and Personal Injury.

  1. Criminal Defense: Protecting Your Freedom

When the state accuses you of a crime, it brings endless resources to bear against you. They have investigators, police officers, and prosecutors all working toward one goal: a conviction.

If you are facing criminal charges—whether it’s a DUI, a felony, a weapons charge, or an Order of Protection—you cannot rely on the system to be fair. You need an equalizer.

I challenge the state's evidence at every turn. Did the police have probable cause? Was the search legal? Is the witness reliable? I dig into the details that overworked prosecutors might overlook. From restoring your Second Amendment rights through F.O.I.D. card revocation hearings to defending you against serious felony accusations, I provide the aggression and representation required to protect your future.

  1. Family Law: Restructuring Your Future

Divorce and custody battles are often painted as "endings." I prefer to view them as a "restructuring." You are not just ending a marriage; you are building a new future for yourself and, most importantly, your family and, in many case your children.

Family law requires a delicate balance of iron and velvet. You need a strategist who can aggressively protect your assets and financial future, but you also need a compassionate advisor who prioritizes the well-being of your children. I understand the heartbreak involved in these cases. I provide the steady hand you need to navigate the emotional turmoil while ensuring that you don't make decisions out of guilt or fear that will hurt you financially down the road.

  1. Personal Injury: Restoring Your Life

When you are injured due to someone else's negligence, insurance companies immediately go into damage control mode. To them, you are a claim number. They have algorithms designed to calculate the absolute minimum amount of money they can pay you to go away.

I see a life interrupted. I see the pain, the missed work, the medical bills, and the stress on your family.

I handle the insurance companies and the "legal noise" so you can focus on what matters most: healing. I don't let them dictate the value of your injury. I fight for maximum compensation because I know that your settlement isn't just a check—it's the resources you need to put your life back together.
